MGSi (Device)

This webpage documents the MGSi (Device) app.

The MGSi (Device) app is a device-based interface to the MGSi system, a workflow and document management system that provides HTTP/S access to the MGSi databases from desktops, tablets and mobile devices.

The UWP / Android / iOS screen-shots for each page are grouped together. Use the Show/Hide Options to toggle the display of the screen-shots for each device type.

The Android screen-shots are from an Android Pixel 2 R 11.0 - API 30 device. The iOS screen-shots are from an iPhone SE (2nd generation) iOS 15.0 device.

Tip: use draft mode when printing to a color printer.

Using the Search Bar Control (Device)

The Search Bar control is used to specify a term to filter the lists.

Usage

1. Type a term to search for in the edit box and tap ENTER (UWP and iOS) or tap the Search glyph (Android).
2. Tap the 'X' to clear the edit box and restore the list. You can also tap the Refresh menu item.

Caveats

1. The Search Bar control is not displayed unless there are 5 or more items in the list.
2. Filtered lists are not sortable. The original list is always used for sorting.
3. Sorted lists are not filterable. The original list is always used for filtering.

Used to display the list of all documents that met your search criteria. There are 3 different titles for this page:

1. MGSi Workflow Step Values

3. MGSi Finder Results

The number of fields displayed in the list is based on the fields defined in the SQL select statements, and for MGSi Workflow Step Values , based on the number of fields that aren't marked as Visible=false (see MGSi Field Settings ). Use the Toggle option to show/hide the Values item.

Used to add notes for the current shared file. Admin users can edit and delete notes from all users. Non-admin users can only edit/delete notes they created. Tap an item in the list to display the Options dialog.

What's displayed in the Files page for each file?

1. The first line displays a glyph for the file type (a camera if a photo) and the Description.
2. The second line displays:
   1. The base name of the file stored on the server.
   2. The URL type.
   3. The file extension.
   4. The insert type name and glyph. This corresponds to the insert type displayed in MGSi Web.
3. The third line displays:
   1. File ID #
   2. The user id and user name of the person who inserted the file.
   3. The 'notes' glyph. A glyph with 'writing' is displayed if the file has notes. An empty glyph is displayed if there are no notes for the file.
4. The fourth line displays:
   1. The size of the file in K bytes.
   2. The time stamp of when the file was inserted (when the photo was taken).
   3. Whether or not the file will be displayed if you tap the 'Preview' menu option. See above.
   4. The sequence number. This number is displayed in the 'Files' and 'Preview' page and is useful when you have multiple files that are similar to each other.
5. The fifth line displays the Category and Sub Category for the file.

Note for Android users where Chrome is your default browser: PDF files are not displayed 'directly'; they are 'just' downloaded (to the Drive app by default) and a blank page is displayed.

After a PDF file is launched:

3. Tap on the file that was just downloaded.
4. The file is displayed.

As an alternative, install the PDF viewer or set Firefox as your default browser.

MGSi Web (Device)

Displays a web file.

Linked Files

Linked files that are HTML files are displayed in this page and not in MGSi Linked File (Device).

The display of linked HTML files works best for files without external references. HTML files with references to external resources (CSS, JS, image, etc.) that are not fully qualified will not be downloaded. To avoid these problems, use the Link Web option.

XML files

XML files with XSL HREF processing instructions and non-well-formed XML files are not displayed correctly for Android and iOS devices. Admin users can tap the Browser option to confirm.

As an alternative, display the file in MGSi Web. MGSi Web uses a 'special' XSL template to display XML files.

Server Error Message

If the Server Error webpage is displayed with the '500 - Internal server error' message, notify your MGSi administrator. This message implies a possible IIS authentication configuration error. As an alternative, view the web file using MGSi Web.

MGSi Preview (Device)

Used to display the files for the work item all on one page. The control (web, image, media) used is based on the URL Type property.

A lot of data may be downloaded. You must wait for the download(s) to complete. Don't flick or use the Top/Bottom options until the download(s) are complete.

Displaying media files on Android devices may cause flashing/scrolling. The top of the page will be displayed when the processing is complete.

The following file types are not displayed:

1. Files that require external programs: PDF, Office documents
2. Zero length files
3. Files marked as missing
4. Outlook *.MSG files
5. Android: TIFF files
6. Files larger than 30 MB.

Lots of data

If the total size of the files to be downloaded is more than 250 MB for admin users or 100 MB for non-admin users, a confirmation message is displayed.

If there are too many files of a particular type, an action sheet is displayed to select the file type to be displayed. For Android devices, the filter options are not displayed. Tap the back arrow, then select a different type.

MGSi About (Device)

The About page displays information, capabilities and rights for the device.

Each section has an expander control to let you show/hide (toggle) individual sections. Tap on the section header (the rows with the up and down arrows) to toggle the section.

Use the Map option to verify the accuracy of the Location Services settings.

MGSi Problem Reporting (Device)

Used to submit a problem report. A work item is generated that you can then track, if your user ID is assigned to the MER document type.

The local log file is uploaded for use with problem resolution. If you don't want to 'share' the contents of the log, use the Clear Log option from the Log page before tapping Submit.

MGSi User Guide Search (Device)

Used to search the MGSi User Guide webpages (help topics).

Enter a term to search for in the Search Term edit box, then tap Submit. From the Results page, tap on an item in the list to display the User Guide webpage (topic) with each occurrence of the search term highlighted. The results are sorted by the webpage Title in ascending sequence. Note that searches are case-insensitive.
